What is VoLTE?

Voice over LTE (VoLTE) lets you make clearer phone calls over 4G (LTE) networks. Boost Mobile uses the full coverage of the Telstra mobile network. When Telstra closes the 3G network on 28th October 2024, VoLTE will be required to make calls (including emergency calls).

Important - Emergency calling

If your device doesn’t support VoLTE emergency calling, you will not be able to make an emergency call to 000 on the Telstra Mobile Network. You won’t be able to make voice calls or connect on our network if your device doesn’t have Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology, even with 4G data.

Which devices are compatible?

To use VoLTE, you'll need a 4G device which is VoLTE-capable. It will also need to be compatible with the following technology and bands:

  • Required: 4G 700 MHz (B28),
  • Optional: 4G 1800 MHz (B3) banding.

Most 4G and 5G phones manufactured and sold in Australia from January 2019 support VoLTE. However, there may be exceptions or specific models that don’t support it, so we recommend that you verify with the manufacturer or through technical specifications. If you’re unsure or need technical support, refer to your user manual or contact us.

VoLTE International roaming

Telstra has arrangements for carrying voice calls with individual roaming partners in other countries. While traditionally relying on 2G and 3G networks, agreements have been expanded to enable VoLTE over 4G. In select regions, VoLTE on 4G is the sole option as roaming partners have phased out 2G and 3G networks.

This means it's important that you have a VoLTE roaming compatible device when using your phone overseas. The handsets that can be used for roaming using VoLTE can be different to devices that can be used for VoLTE calling in Australia. Most phones manufactured and sold in Australia from July 2022 support VoLTE roaming. However, there may be exceptions or specific models that don’t support it, so we recommend that you verify with the manufacturer or through technical specifications.

If you’re unsure or need technical support, refer to your user manual or contact us.

International roaming is not available in all countries and destinations are subject to change. Check Boost Mobile international roaming destinations. In the listed destinations voice calls, SMS, MMS, and data services may not be available with all operators. The availability of voice calls, SMS, MMS, and data services are dependent on a number of factors including your destination, the participating operator in that destination and the device you use.

Important - Making emergency calls while overseas

In order to make an emergency call while overseas, it is important that your device also supports VoLTE Emergency Calls. If your device doesn't support VoLTE Emergency Calls, and there is no 3G network coverage available in your location in the country you’re using your device, you will not be able to make an emergency call, even though you may have 4G or 5G coverage. The devices below are VoLTE Emergency Call tested and capable devices that Telstra has launched prior to 1 July 2022. In addition, every handset/tablet that Telstra has launched since 1 July 2022 also supports VoLTE Emergency Calls.
